Folios 271-273. Letter from the Board of Ordnance to Secretary Vernon enclosing: Folios 272-273 an extract of a letter from Colonel Romer at Boston, New England to Lord Romney and the Board of Ordnance describing the fortifications of Castle Island that, because of the violent frosts, will not be completed until the spring. He lists the ordnance that will be required for the fortifications to be made at Albany, [New York] and Skenechtade [Schenectady, New York] and for the defence of New York. He says that 'the French have laid their designs firmly for the prize and destruction of this vast country, and to take this and other provinces if a war happen. They have their spies everywhere and we have corrupted traitors in our very breasts, that they will not fail in their design except they are prevented'. In light of this he recommends a 'goodman' be sent to command the fortifications and to be Lieutenant-Governor at the same time.
