Folios 138-139. Letter from Chambers Slaughter, at Worcester, to [?James Vernon] that pursuant to [Vernon's] letter of 7 March 'Captain Giles has been privately examined in prison who denies the fact he stands charged with and also denies he was ever privy to any ill design against the King or government all fair means hath been used to procure an ingenious confession from him which hath altogether proved fruitless; and upon further consideration it was thought fit to cause Captain Giles to appear this day before the Lieutenancy where he was strictly examined but all to no purpose. There have been several other persons upon their examination, but no confession can be procured from them'.
