Folios 71-72. Ja [James] Vernon, Whitehall, to Monsieur Marmande [Jacob Aceré Marmonde, British Resident or Secretary at Brussels]. 'I have received your letter of the 20th, with the printed treaty and a comment upon it to obviate the Spanish monarchy's being conferred upon a younger son of France; which I think they need not take so much pains about, for I suppose the French have well considered it, and think it more for their interest to have so much of the succession as they have reserved to themselves annexed to the crown of France, than to have a younger son go away with the whole, who will grow a Spaniard in time, and may make France uneasy. Though this be a piece of no great curiosity, yet when anything relating to the succession comes out you will oblige me in sending it over'. Copy.
