Folios 52-53. Letter from James Vernon to Monsieur Marmande principally concerning the fate of Captain Pincarton and about twenty other Scotsmen who went with the original settlers to Darien [Isthmus of Panama] were captured by the Spanish at Cartagena and some of whom have been sent to Spain 'and as it is said condemned to die'. The King is anxious that the men be spared and sent home 'which perhaps would be no disservice to the Spaniards, since such an execution may long be kept in remembrance'. He writes that the King may again interpose and the Secretary of Scotland 'intends to desire it by this post; but, since any delay may put it beyond remedy, I wish you could so represent it to the ministers there that they would write to Spain, and at least get the execution of these men deferred till their case has been further considered'. Lord Jersey and the Elector of Bavaria are mentioned.
