Folios 65-66. A letter from J [John] Ellis to Ambassador [Joseph] Williamson, dated at Whitehall [London, Middlesex]. The King [William III] is staying at Newmarket [Cambridgeshire] until next week, since the weather is good. He has visited Lord Orford [at Chippenham, Cambridgeshire], where he met the Duke of Shrewsbury, the Chancellor of the Exchequer [Charles Montagu], Mr Smith, and Lord Coningsby. A new ministry is proposed, with Shrewsbury taking 'the stick' [i.e., Lord Chamberlain], Lord Godolphin would be reappointed to the Treasury again, and proposing that 'Mr Chancellor be made [Southern] Secretary of State'. The Czar [of Muscovy, Russia, Peter the Great] has been to Oxon [Oxford, Oxfordshire] and yachts are being prepared for his journey to Holland [Netherlands]. There is reference to 'news' [?false rumours] of the death of the King of Spain [Carlos II], discussions with the French ambassador, and the possibility of settling the crown on the D [Duke] of Berry. The House of Commons has been debating ways and means; and Ellis has sent the 'book of Irish statutes' to Williamson's house.
