Description

Captured ship: Jacob of Amsterdam (master Siewert Olpherts of Friesland).

History: a Dutch ship (130 lasts, 15 men), bound from Wyburg [Vyborg] in Russia to Cadiz, laden with deals; taken on 7/18 August 1744 by the privateer Rye (John Sargent commanding), and brought first into Spithead, and then into Cowes, Isle of Wight.

[CP 1-CP 4]: standing interrogatories, three examinations taken at Portsmouth, commissioners' affidavit, parchment wrapper;

[CP 5-CP 6]: attestation and claim by Olpherts and others;

[CP 7-CP 8]: two attestations by the captors.

[Decision: restored, 29 September 1744; appealed and sentence confirmed. Appeal papers in HCA 42/37/3]
