Description

Captured ship: Maria Elizabeth of Hamburg (master Hans Peter Leuw or Luers).

History: a Hamburg ship (160 tons, 10 men), bound from La Rochelle to Dunkirk, laden with brandy and salt; taken on 10/21 April 1748 about 7 leagues off the Start Point by the privateer Defiance (John Lauga commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1]: three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 2: attestation and claim;
  • [CP 3]: allegation;
  • [CP 4-CP 5]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 15 ship's papers.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 15.
