On 10 July 2007, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) announced that a new National Council for Educational Excellence had been set up, to drive forward the Government's long term aspirations for children and young people's education. Chaired by the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State, and drawing its membership from leaders in business, the university and voluntary sectors, alongside school leaders, it was intended that the Council would act as advocates and champions to transform expectations for the education system and advise the Government on strategy and measures to achieve world-class education.
