Folio 67. Thomas Saywell to Francis, Viscount Newport. Letter. 'I have sent my wife with a petition to my Lord Shrewsbury who was pleased to commit me to the Gatehouse on my return to his lordship a fortnight since after I had escaped out of the Bastille in France, his lordship suspecting I did no, which I humbly assure your lordship I really did and for no other ends than to serve his Majesty King William with my life in whatever I shall be commanded; I hope his lordship hath received some advice thereof'. He asks that Lord Newport speak to Lord Shrewsbury on his behalf. [Note. Shrewsbury was Secretary of State for the Southern Department from 14 February 1689 until 2 June 1690.
