Court and Date of Trial: Clerkenwell Police Court, April 1843.
Crime: Begging in Highbury Place.
Initial Sentence: 10 days imprisonment.
Outcome: ‘… unwilling to liberate…’ .
Petitions and letters: Petition from J Benson of City of London, pleading inhumanity of court to separate child, sent to workhouse, from imprisoned father.
Report from J B Greenwood, committing magistrate, with copy of evidence that prisoner is persistent beggar, and forwarding similar letter of complaint from petitioner.
