Folios 56-57. The Duke of Bolton to [the Earl of Shrewsbury]. Though very ill of his fall in the forest, upon receipt of his lordship's letter he sent a warrant to two justices of the peace, whom he can confide in, and has ordered them with all speed to seize [his] horses and arms and search [his] house for priests. He asked the justices of the peace to keep him informed. He adds in a post-scriptum that when he was at Winchester on 'the 18th' at the meeting of the deputy-lieutenants he depended upon entertaining them at the deanery, but the prebends refused him, and he has been told since by some clergy of the diocese, that they said at a visitation it was because he complained at the House of Lords that they did not pray for King William [III] and Queen Mary [II] in the cathedral as they ought to do.
