A letter from the mayor advising of an information he has received against [John] Dearle, the head schoolmaster for writing and publishing a treasonable paper containing a declaration by the [Jacobite] 'Pretender' [James Francis Edward Stuart]. The mayor has committed Dearle to prison. Endorsed 'the assizes are 28 March [1721]'. Enclosing examinations sworn before Wm [William] Robbins, and Jno [John] Higginson [Higginsson]. (1) The information of [post mistress] Anne Walley, widow, against Dearle. Dated on 3 February 1721. (2) The information of Richard Birkes [Berkes], the town's reader and usher of the school, against Dearle. Dated on 3 February 1721. (3) The information of John Dearle, saying he received the paper three months ago from Mr Berrington. Copy verified by Ed [Edward] Green. Dated on 4 February 1721.
