Description

Folios 82-86. From Jo [John] Chetwynd; P [Paul] Dominique; T [Thomas] Pelham; ?D Pulteney; Edw [Edward] Ashe; M [Martin] Bladen (1) [Earl of] Westmoreland. To Earl of Stanhope. Place: Whitehall [London, Middlesex].

A letter from the Council of Trade, enclosing their report on the prohibition of wearing 'painted, stained or dyed calicoes', as requested in [Charles] Delafaye's letter of 24 June 1720. (1) Trade Commissioners' report, advising that they can recommend no further assistance, but offering other remedies to the company, including: making good the deficiency of interest on debt owed by the public to the company; measures to protect the EIC's monopoly; extension of the EIC's sea jurisdiction at the Cape of Good Hope, to protect against the 'clandestine trade' carried on by ships from the Dutch colonies; allowing slaves to be exported directly from Madagascar to the West Indies; restrictions on tea imports from Ostend, and other places; penalties for trading EIC goods at St Helena and Ascension Island; prohibition of trade directly to British colonies in America; penalties on ships' commanders trading outside the EIC charter; measures against unshipping goods at sea; rating EIC goods; easing of debts owed in relation to the miscalculation of duties, and other financial measures.
