A letter from the customs commissioners accompanying an officer detaining [Thomas] Carter, a waterman, who hired a boat allowing the escape to France of Robert] Knight, cashier of the South Sea [Bubble] Company. Enclosing: (1) Information of John Purnell, customs officer of Margate [Kent] concerning Knight's escape to Calais aboard an East Indiaman, Anthony Hampton master, including the evidence of a sailor William Shillingfort. (2) Information of Joseph Beverton, customs officers at Canterbury [Kent] concerning his detention of Hampton, commander of the 'Betty' sloop. Mentions: letters from Knight to Mrs Mary Thompson, directed to South Sea House, and to Lady Knapp in Denmark Street; and Sir George Bing [Byng].
