A brief memorandum: 'The Duke of Newcastle has been so obliging as to promise Mr Southcote that he would order it should be enquired into whether Sir Hector McLain [McLean] was admitted to be upon the Cartel [of Frankfurt] for exchange of French prisoners, and in that case his Grace will have the goodness to set him be released upon his parole, in consideration of his present bad state of health'.
