Deposition of Margaret Ley, gingerbread maker of Lichfield [Staffordshire], concerning a physical attack on her because her husband and son supported [Whig electoral candidates] [Lord] Gower and [Lord] Anson. The attack, by shoemaker Thomas Greaves of Bloxwitch [Staffordshire], labourer Robert Past of Lichfield, miller Thomas Whitby of Lichfield, and labourer Samuel Past, took place on 19 September [1747] at her stall, near the Bull Ring, at a fair in Birmingham, Warwickshire. [Dating note: Gower and Anson were elected for Lichfield on 2 July 1747].
