Part 2, Folio 31.
The petition of Edward McManus [McManey] concerning fraud he uncovered at the Royal Hospital Chelsea [Middlesex]. The petitioner seeks payment of the reward promised him by Mr Walpole for the apprehending of O'Bryan, Lamature, Villanuff and Frate; and he requests that the Secretary of War demand the delivery to him of papers held by Mr Ayres, the secretary of the hospital commissioners, relating to disbursements paid to 'the pretended Captain Carey, a known Papist [Roman Catholic]'. Mentions: Lord Townsend [Townshend] and General Stanhope; Mr Wortley Montagu, one of the Lords of the Treasury; Justice Saunders; Lord Chief Justice Parker; 'one Tibbal'; Brigadier Stanwick; Colonel Chudleigh; 'one Doyl' [Doyle] a cousin of Carey; Colonel Molesworthy; Colonel Cootes; Mr Mann [Man], paymaster of the hospital. [Dating note: Edward Wortley Montagu was a Treasury Comissioner 1714-1715; General James Stanhope became the Earl of Stanhope in 1718; and Robert Walpole was twice army paymaster between 1714 and his appointment as 'prime minister' First Lord [Chancellor of the Exchequer] in 1721. Endorsed, historically, with an inferred date of '1721'].
