Description

Folios 84-85. From Lord Hartford. To Charles Delafaye.

'I spoke to the Duke of Newcastle this morning to desire him to give an audience to Colonel [Samuel] Shute the Governor of New England, in relation to a reference he sent to the Attorney-General, and he appointed the said Colonel at nine next Friday, but since I have seen the Governor and that Friday will be too late to recall this reference, which certainly not ought to have been referred as the whole matter of it consisting of private intelligence that Colonel Shute only showed to give the Secretary a notion of what the enemies of the Governor were doing, and therefore should never have been made public for were he to produce these letters they would not amount to any proof and would expose the King's friends who gave this intelligence and put it out of the Governor's power ever to learn for the future what is doing. The Governor has been with the Attorney-General who told him that this affair was not properly referred, therefore I must beg of you to mention this affair as soon as possible to the Duke of Newcastle that this reference may be recalled. I send this letter by the Governor that he may speak more largely to you on this subject, if you want any further information'.
