A petition for relief from John Ridge, recounting his service to the Crown. Mentions: the 'indirect practices' of the consul in Ostend, of Ostend ships sailing under English colours, and of the ships-of-war ?'Grissom' and ?'James' being built for the 'Pretender' [James Frances Edward Stuart]; his account of Johnson alias Reeves, who confessed to tricking the Bank of England out of £10,000; his service for Lord Stanhope during merchant voyages to Lisbon [Portugal]; Ridge's account of being held captive by a Jacobite captain aboard his ship in Portsmouth [Hampshire], and then being held by Sir John Gibson; his commercial misfortunes, after his release, amount to losses of £700, and his need to sign on as mate on a voyage to the West Indies. [Dated in accordance with a reference to the recent death of Lord Stanhope].
