Folio 106. From Samuel Mitchell. To Viscount Townshend.
Petition to be offered a new post of Riding Officer at the West end of the Isle of Wight to stop the illegal trade being carried out by smugglers. Lord William Paulet and Col. Morgan have recommended this, based on the memorial of Mr Phripps, the Collector of his Majesties Customs at the Port of Cowes. The Commissioner did not think it fit to lay the memorial before the Lord of the Treasury, thinking this would diminish the revenue. The petitioner argues that it would rather advance the revenue. As he put a stop to Lords North and Grey's intended Voyage to France, thus gaining the ill will of Col. Holmes and others of the Jacobite party, this employment would better enable him to serve his Majesty.
