Folio 92. From Thomas Saunders, Francis Smart, Charles Kipling, Thomas Green, Gun Makers. To George I.
Petition by Gun Makers to His Majesty's Tower of London for financial relief after the King of Portugal's agent, Jerome Olivere failed to pay for a substantial order made in 1707, of guns to be used in the war against Spain. In 1709 Olivere promised to pay interest, but nothing was forthcoming. The petitioners put their case to the Earl of Sunderland, who contacted the Ambassador, Lord Galloway. But he was soon after recalled. The families are living in a reduced state because of this debt.
