The case of John Pagett who was promised financial compensation for himself and his father. John was employed as Director and Manager of a woollen manufacturer in Charlaval in Normandy, at the expence of John Law, then Controller General of the Finances. The post was worth three hundred pounds per annum. In December 1720 Sir Robert Sutton, residing in Paris, sent Mr Sully to Pagett to propose he return home, and promised to clear his and his father's debts, which amounted to over eight hundred pounds. Only a small portion of his debts have been discharged and both men are in desperate circumstances.
