Part 1, Folios 8-9. From John Cooper. To G [Giles] Earle. Place: Trowbridge [Wiltshire].
'An unhappy accident has spoiled all: for on Saturday Mr Methuen of Bradford [on Avon] on the instigation of some forward clothiers there, apprehended two weavers concerned in the late riots: upon the first notice of it, I sent my clerk to Mr Merthuen to advise him to admit them to bail, for the consequence would be prejudicial to the public peace at this crtical juncture. He returned me no answer; but one Mr Heylyn a forward clothier and very obnoxious to the weavers on account of stopping their wages, told my clerk they should be committed and on Sunday last they were sent to Salisbury Goal under the care of 16 dragoons'. He describes the attempt to rescue the arrested men during which three weavers were shot one of whom died, and his subsequent efforts to resolve the situation. Copy.
