Description

Part 1, Folios 1-2. From G [George] Vaughan. To [Charles, Viscount Townshend, Secretary of State for the Northern Department]. Place: Bath [Somerset].

Letter concerning the weavers' riots at Trowbridge [Wiltshire] and Bradford [on Avon]. Vaughan attributes the actions of Mr Hilleen [Heylyn], a clothier at Bradford 'more hated by the populace than ever I knew a man', as the one of the causes of the trouble but observes that, notwithstanding the encounter between the weavers and the dragoons when three of the former were shot one fatally, they cheered 'King George for ever'. He advises that a regiment of foot dispersed in the parishes would be more effective in quelling trouble than the dragoons stationed in the towns.
