Description

Folios 1-2. A disjointed, roughly written and phonetically spelt memorandum that appears to relate to the proposed Jacobite uprising in Scotland and the French invasion of England in 1744. The Prince [Charles Edward Stuart] is to land in Scotland and declare himself a Protestant. There is a consultation with Lochiel. It is not clear who will raise the men of Connel and Kintyre but who ever it is believes that with Lamon [sic] McLachlan,?Lerge ?Lowp, ?Sanda and 'the gentlemen of the name of McNeill' he will be able to raise 1,000 good men for the service but that it is requested the western clans should make a descent that way to escort them. He 'believes the Frazers may be trusted all the McDonals, Mcleans, McLeods, McKenzies, Gordons, Robisons [Robinsons], Stuarts, Mcphersons, McDougals, Mckinnis, Mcgregors and all except the Campbells and some other petty names are for the King but arms and money absolute[ly] necessary'. Two months warning is to be given so that that 'they keep their persons free and may surprise Inverlochy, Fort Augustus and Inverness Colonels' commissions necessary for the chiefs'. Argyle, Breadalbane and Sir Duncan [?Forbes] are mentioned. On the reverse is a note that the Duke of Perth's loyalty is sure; willing to raise £5,000 or £6,000; if thought proper to sound out the Country party and the Duke of Atholl as to the extent of the willingness to serve the King.
