The petition of Hugh Ross, a merchant of Tayne [Tain, Ross-shire] now in Gottenburg [Sweden], seeking clemency for killing his former friend and kinsman, Hugh Ross of Achnacloich [Inverness-shire] in a duel near the deceased's house. The quarrel arose from the election of magistrates in 1720. (1) Affidavits concerning the incident from William Ross, merchant and baillie of Tain; Donald Ross, baillie of Tain, mentioning the surgeon Alexander Ross and the late Doctor Paterson; Alexander Stewart, baillie and merchant of Tain, mentioning the deceased's brother Robert Ross; and Rodorick [Roderick] Dingwall of Cambuscurrie [Ross-shire]. Sworn before James Fraser of Achnagarn [Inverness-shire], sheriff depute and justice for Ross-shire. (2) Report of the Lord Advocate in favour of the petitioner, dated on 7 October 1726.
