The Culture Online initiative existed from 2002 to 2007. It set out to build a digital bridge between learning and culture. Working in partnership with more than 50 organisations, Culture Online used innovative technology to reach new audiences for the arts, with a particular emphasis on engaging hard-to-reach groups. It commissioned 26 interactive projects, winning 25 major awards and the initiative reached more than 15.5 million people through its websites and outreach programmes.
