Folios 135-136. From Charles Delafaye. To Duke of Newcastle. Place: Whitehall.
I enclose what is come from Ireland (where our affairs go worse and worse) and from France and Spain. I have kept the original letter from my Lord Carteret, which I suppose Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer may direct to be read to the Lord Justices. He came to Town this evening and found ready for his perusal all the letters to and from foreign parts since his departure for the country, which make no slender heap. Whilst I was preparing the warrant for Jesus College, a doubt occurred whether that Society being without a Head could act, so as to accept of a licence of mortmain or admit a new Fellow; which having proposed to Mr Attorney-General I received the enclosed answer and I find by it that all our diligence is very likely to prove ineffectual'.
