Folios 173-174. The examination of John Tideman age 27 born in Workington, Cumberland and who lived from a very young age with Lord Hopetoun until his death, then with Sir John Hume of Tranton and latterly with Lord Elcho. He details his travels in Europe with Lord Elcho after the Battle of Culloden and his own when sent to Scotland to enquire both as to the possibility of a pardon for his master and the latter's affairs. He says that Elcho now goes by the name of Chevalier Johnson. He mentions Mr Anderson, Elcho's lawyer in Edinburgh; Blaze valet de chambre to General Sinclair in London; David Davidson; Mackenzie who was governor to Elcho; the Duke of Perth; Lord John Drummond; George Lockhart [?] of Carnwath; Sir Wm [William] Gordon; Carnegy [Carnegie] of Boysack; Sir James Douglas. 'Ordered to be discharged by Duke of Bedford 16/2/1747'. [See also SP 36/106/1/56].
