Part 2, Folios 78-79. From Sir Robert Walpole. To Duke of Newcastle.
That he has little news to trouble the Duke 'the foreign parts of the world having furnished us with no new materials for ratiocination, and Scotland remaining in statu[s] quo in expectation of Lord Hay, from whom we have yet heard nothing since his arrival there'. He gives his observations on the dispute in Scotland regarding the Malt Tax concerning which the Article of Union relating to the Excise has been referred to the Attorney and Solicitor General for their opinion. He has written to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Charles Delafaye, by order of the Lords Justices, 'has sent the emplification of the surrender of [William] Wood's patent [for minting coin]'. He ends his letter 'And now I have done with Scotland and Ireland, England is so barren, (it were well for Tom Spence that his women were so) that it affords not one quid nunc to help extend a poor letter to the length of a letter of business, for it is no news to tell you how much I am an humble servant to all the family at Halland [East Sussex] and in particular, My Dear Lord, Harry's'.
