Part 2, Folio 55. To [? Duke of Newcastle]. Place: London.
'My Dear Lord, Late last night one Mr Firth arrived with a large packet from France, I have just perused and got them decyphered, and send these to your Grace without loss of time. You know I never pretend to reason much upon foreign politics and we have so many cautions of secrecy from abroad, that I shall not venture to utter a syllable about what has happened. It will be unlucky if the embarkation from Barcelona should be designed for Port Mahon just at the time that Kane is just sent away and the two regiments kept at Gibraltar. The last declaration from France is very explicit, but I hope in God we shall not have ?mediated, [?] we are alone involved in an actual war and must beg other people to join'. [Unsigned and apparently incomplete. Endorsed 'Sr Rob Walpole'.
