'By the enclosed your Grace may find the deplorable circumstances of Robert Elston a prisoner in the Marshalsea. I don't know the man, but some gentleman of my acquaintance gives him a good character. If your Grace will reflect upon it, your goodness and humane disposition will think about a year's imprisonment a severe punishment for an innocent man, so we must think him, if no evidence appears against him, that he should have been tried long since'.
