Having heard that James Powell has been granted a reprieve Chute says that he takes upon himself to represent the hardship of the case of Powell's brother John 'who now continues under the like sentence and must inevitably suffer though they were both equally concerned'. Chute being informed it was their first offence says 'I with all humility conceive that this poor wretch dies not so much for his offence as for want of some friend' and asks that the Duke will put John Powell's case to the King.
