Part 2, Folio 26. From John Price, Ordinary to the Bishop of Winchester. To [Duke of Newcastle]. Place: Winchester.
'I am informed your Grace hath been pleased to intercede for a reprieve for one James Powell now condemned in Winchester Goal for robbing on the highway for three weks; he has a brother whose name is John Powell that is condemned for the same crime and must die next Wednesday. If your Grace would be pleased to intercede for John Powell's life for three weeks, it will give him as well as his brother time to prepare for another world: they did not come under my care until last Monday, neither of them could say the Lord's Prayer, nor had any notion of a God. I have taken a great deal of pains with them and it will take more with them, if it will please his Majesty to give us longer time'.
