Part 1, Folios 97-98. From Charles, Viscount Townshend.
Letter marked private addressed to Geo [George] Drummond, one of the Commissioners of Customs at Edinburgh, desiring him to make discreet enquiries about John Walkinshaw, 'a dangerous and intriguing fellow', who has arrived in Scotland with packets and instructions from Rome. He suggests that Alexander Tait, a merchant at Leith and friend and correspondent of Walkinshaw, be observed in order to discover him and that his cousin Walkinshaw of Barrowfield will undoubtedly be coming to see him. Townshend advises that Drummond sends his reply privately 'by a safe hand as far as Berwick' before trusting it to the post. Copy.
