Folios 77-78. From John Jones. To Charles, Viscount Townshend. Place: Arbroath [Angus].
Stating that he is a Presbyter of the Church of England and, having come from England at the invitation of Mr Robinson Episcopal minister at Aberdeen, he has been refused admission to be minister of the Episcopal Church at Forfar owing to his 'unshaken loyalty and duty' to the [Stuart] Crown; that the inhabitants of Forfar are 'notoriously barefaced in their rebellious practices and insolently defend the retender's right'; that the Episcopal[ian] clergy 'leave no means unattempted to alienate the affections of the people to his Majesty'; that he is 'singled out for a mark of persecution by the Jacobites 'for his loyalty and asking for relief. The Reverend Doctor Tomlinson, Rector of Wickham, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne is mentioned.
