Folio 40. From Nicholas Paxton.
That before he entered public service [as Solicitor to the Treasury] his private business was sufficient to maintain his family but his long absences when prosecuting [Jacobite] rebels has resulted in a loss of clients, a great many of whom have become his 'greatest enemies' on account of his zeal for the King's service and praying to be recommended for a 'provision'. He names William Walker, the present secretary to the Wine Licence Office as 'a solicitor of good fortune and business' and William Johnson, Solicitor to the Salt Duty, as 'a person well able to live without that employment'.
