Folios 16-17. From George Tilson [Under-Secretary for the Northern Department]. To [William] Leathes. Place: Whitehall.
'You will have had before this what the East India Company propose to induce their runagates to return. I wish your endeavours may succeed for tho[ugh] I believe others have learned the way to the Indies, yet our people have been of most use to them. I am sorry the profits on their goods arise so high, it is very tempting to go on at all hazards. I hear little of Knight here, only now and then a keen joke or so, on his being escaped by our connivance, and one newspaper insinuated that he might be dispatched, because as Friar Dominic says 'dead men tell no tales'. You will see in our Gazette that the renunciations are exchanged. I fancy the great work of Cambrai is half over by that, and it has been a great management to bring so difficult a point to bear'.
