Description

Folio 3. From Tho [Thomas] Woolley on behalf of the Court of Directors of the United East India Company. To George Tilson (Under-Secretary of State for the Northern Department]. Place: East India House, London.

Having considered the extract of the letter from Mr [William] Leathes dated 22 October 1721 New Style relating to Captain Tobin, the directors find Mr [William] Leathes is not fully informed of the true state of the case relating to the three persons therein mentioned to have made their peace with the company, nor of the circumstances of that case. The Company have had no treaty with Captain Soleguard or any other on his account. They have accommodated matters with the other two, namely Mr Naish and Mr Holland, because they voluntarily submitted themselves to the company and have each given a substantial bond with sufficient sureties not to sail, go, trade or adventure into the East Indies, China or any other ports or places within the limits of the Company's charter. Naish has been given permission to go to China. The Company have not as yet prosecuted any person for trading to the East Indies under foreign commissions or colours nor will they prosecute him [Tobin] if he speedily returns though they cannot agree to the revocation of the order mentioned in [William] Leathes's letter unless they have some further submission on [Tobin's] part.
