Lord Sutherland [John Gordon, 16th Earl of Sutherland] to the King. Requests to be given the position of Tellor [Chancellor] of the Exchequer, following the death of Mr [John] Smith [the previous day]. Sutherland stresses out that it would help him pay the debts he contracted on behalf of the government during the 'latest revolution' [? 1715 Jacobite rebellion].
