Description

Folios 60-65. From Commissioners of Customs T Maynard, Walter Yonge, walker and Ja [James] Campbell. (1) Captain Robt [Robert] Robinson, commander of HMS Spy.. To Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Place: Custom House, London.

A letter enclosing documents concerning the interception of two French vessels smuggling brandy off the east coast of England, mentioned by the French navy secretary Monsieur de [Count of] Maurepas in his letter to Count de Broglio. (1) Copy of a letter from Captain Robinson, of the sloop 'Spy', with an account of the engagement, off Cromer [Norfolk], the escape of the French snow, and the capture of the dogger 'La Mouche', out of Calais, Robert Cheney master.Dated at North Shields [Northumberland], on 31 July 1724. (2) Copy of an affidavit from two boys captured aboard 'La Mouche', Gasper Tourie and Pierre Newcor. The vessel ('La Mouche') was laden with 638 half-anchors of brandy, loaded by Messers Gilbere, Moulier, Granden and Tonnere. Mentions a snow out of Calais called 'L'Esperance', Francois Monnie master, owned by Messers Mercardy, and Druyer. Dated at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, on August 27.
