Folios 51-52. From Nicholas Paxton. To [Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle Upon Tyne]. Place: Southampton Buildings [London].
A letter concerning the identity of Mrs Hay [Margery Hay, alias Margery Murray]. The author has questioned Mr Smeybert [John Smibert], a painter, who has been in Rome, and says he has seen Mrs Hay at church there, and has also seen her husband [John Hay of Cromlix]. While in Rome, Smibert says he refused to paint portraits at the court of the 'Pretender' [James Francis Edward Stuart]. He is wary of Paxton's questions, saying his business has suffered [among Jacobites] for his attendence at the trial of [Christopher] Layer.
