Folio 23.
The examination of Margery [Hay alias Margery Murray], wife of Colonel John Hay [of Cromlix] concerning her visit to England. Six years abroad have caused her the need to attend to her fortune, which she now feels able to do following the recent decree of the House of Lords. She has been to Rome but will not say whether she has been with the family of the [Jacobite] 'Pretender' [James Francis Edward Stuart]. She denies contact with the late Bishop of Rochester [Francis Atterbury] when she was in Paris [France], and refuses comment when asked the whereabouts of her husband. Signed by: Margery Hay, the Duke of Newcastle, and Lord Townshend.
