Folio 116. Petition to the King of the Merchants of the town and borough of Tiverton [Devon] and others trading in the woollen manufactures and the fisheries. The trade of the town depends upon the exportation of their manufactures to New England and Newfoundland, and returning with fish to sell in Spain, Portugal or Italy and exportation of pilchards and herrings. Their ships are small and defenceless and a great number taken by pirates [?Barbary corsairs], and the men made slaves. They ask the King to apply such remedy as he thinks fit. 37 signatures, including W[illia]m Lewis, Sam[uel] Lewis, John Parsons.
