Folio 99. Petition to the King of William Earl of Sutherland for an estate in compensation for his losses in fighting for the King at the Battle of Culloden. The houses and effects of Captains Hugh Gordon and John Clunnes, two militia officers appointed by the petitioner, were burnt and destroyed. The day before Culloden they attacked the [Jacobite] Earl of Cromarty's Regiment, killed and took them all prisoners except about forty who escaped, took the Earl of Cromarty with his son, and other rebel officers, who were sent to Inverness to his Royal Highness the Duke [of Cumberland].
