Folio 83. Memorial to the Duke of Newcastle of William Smith, late a Lieutenant in Colonel Holmen's Marines, requesting a position in a Company, following long and faithful service in the army abroad and at home. He has been strongly recommended by the Chancellor of Russia, Count Bestuzhev [Ryumin] and Count Czernischoff, the Minister in Moscow. Smith's brother, Doctor Smith, in Moscow with the Empress [Elizabeth Petrovna], supports his brother's request.
