Folio 127. From Chris [Christopher] Layer. To [Charles, Viscount Townshend]. Place: Tower [of London].
The compassionate expression used by your Lordship and Mr Walpole at my examination and in the letter your Lordship condescended to send me hither, encourage me once more humbly to desire your Lordship's and Mr Walpole's intercession to his Majesty on my behalf for mercy. Many others under my unfortunate circumstances have experienced his Majesty's mercy and if your Lordship and Mr Walpole will please to mediate for me it must ever be acknowledged with the highest gratitude by me and my friends and it cannot but be a satisfaction to generous minds to have saved a person from immediate death and a whole family from destitution. I have good hopes in your Lordship's and Mr Walpole's favour and therefore I once more earnestly desire you'll not reject the last request of, My Lord, your Lordship's unfortunate humble servant'.
