Folio 100. From J [John] Westmorland. To The Principal Secretary of State. Place: Rackenford, near Tiverton, Devon.
Strongly affirming his loyalty to the Government, stating that the information sworn against him by Justice Colman is false and saying that 'as soon as I came to this place Mr Colman declared war against me; calling me a Scotch rogue and an informer and desired all his friends to avoid my company, for I informed against Sir Coplestone Bampfeild [Bampfylde] and Mr John Rolls in [the] Scoths [Scottish] [Jacobite] rebellion'. Mr Thorn, the Receiver, Mr Justice Burridge and Mr Heathfield will give him a character reference as he hopes the Bishop of Exeter will. A postscript says 'Mr Hugh Burcher and Mrs Mary Westmorland of Rackenford heard Robt [Robert] Luxton tell John Partridge that he would swear that he heard him say that it was no more pity to kill the king than to kill a dog and that he was an usurper and that he will send the land tax to the Pretender and I heard Wm [William] Cockram affirm the same against him'.
