Folios 87-88. From Chris [Christopher] Layer. To Charles, Viscount Townshend. Place: Tower of London.
Praying that his life may be spared especially as 'I relied upon your lordship and the promises then made me by your lordship and all the rest of those noble persons that what ever I said in answer to those questions your lordship was pleased to ask me should in no sort be made use of as evidence against me. But yet Mr Stanyan and Mr Delafaye appeared against me at my trial and swore to part of what I said before your lordship at the said committee, from notes they took behind my back when I was attending your lordship, and the evidence they gave was, as one of the jurymen told me, the occasion of my conviction'.
