Folio 100. From Lancelot [Blackburne] Bishop of Exeter, Archbishop of York. To [Duke of ? Newcastle]. Place: Derby Court.
'In my apprehension, there is nothing can be done by me within the Archbishopric of York, till I am in actual possession of it. When I am so Your Grace may be very sure to find nothing of that reluctance to your orders in me, which you met with in your dragging me into it. For I think myself so much indebted to Your Grace's kindness in it, cruel as it was, if you will permit me to call it so, that I am determined, in revenge, to claim the right of giving Your Grace the trouble of directing me in every step that I am to take for His Majesty's or your service, in a station which you have persuaded me affords such plentiful means of my being useful in both respects. And if you fail me in that fruit of my obedience to His Majesty's and your commands, I shall think at the rest an insupportable burthern to Your Grace's most obliged and most obedient humble servant'..
